Heartburn is that medical condition in which the gastric juices from the stomach back up into the esophagus. Generally the symptoms of heartburn include a burning pain which starts from behind the sternum and flows upward.
There are many causes that can create a heartburn situation. Sometimes heartburn can be caused when specific foods are eaten. Some of those foods could include the eating of chocolate, high acidic foods like tomatoes and the overuse of caffeine.
In addition, the backward flow of the gastric juices maybe caused because the sphincter muscle between the esophagus and the stomach has weakened. This weakness allows the backward flow of the gastric juices.
There are many ways that individuals try to treat heartburn. Three of those specific ways are through preventative measures, controlling diet and heartburn medication.
Preventative Measures
Heartburn can be an uncomfortable medical condition and can lead to more serious issues. That is why heartburn should be treated. One of the effective ways of treating heartburn is by preventing the condition to begin with.
One of those preventative measures is through the elimination of certain habits. Some of those habits include not smoking before a meal or chewing gum. Each of these actions coupled with eating, causes the individual to take in air which in turn causes air pockets. This in turn causes pressure which can allow for the gastric juices to be in forced back up into the esophagus.
Other preventative measures that can be taken to reduce heartburn and avoid the need for taking heartburn medication include a short walk following a meal. This may prove beneficial in helping the digestion of what has been consumed. Additionally, it is important to wear loose clothing and nothing that is tight. This will help to prevent constriction which can restrict the proper digestive actions from taking place.
Diet
Additional ways that an individual can take preventative measures to avoid the condition of heartburn is through diet. Specifically, as mother said, it is important that food should be thoroughly chewed and not gulped. Also, another preventative measure to avoid the need for taking heartburn medication is by not drinking alcohol while eating.
One other suggestion when it comes to trying to avoid heartburn through one’s diet is to avoid those foods that are high in acid. Examples of those types of foods could include tomatoes, grapefruits, or other citrus fruits.
Taking Heartburn Medication
There are many heartburn medicines available on the market today. Some of those heartburn medications can be purchased over the counter. These heartburn medications that are purchased over the counter include products made from calcium carbonate, magnesium and aluminum. Generally, these products provide quick relief, but the relief is temporary. They simply are designed to neutralize gas in the stomach.
The other types of heartburn relief medications are those that are prescribed by a physician. One such medication is designed to “turn off” the acid pumps that are in the stomach. Examples of these types of heartburn medications are called proton pump inhibitors.
One additional heartburn medication that can be prescribed by a physician are those medications which are called H2 blockers. The action of these types of medication actually works to minimize the production of production in the stomach.
