You can drink lots of water along with your meals and pop an antacid before eating to help prevent heartburn. But after you’ve eaten and you feel the heartburn symptoms starting up, avoid drinking water, because it only adds fuel to the fire. In its place, have a glass of milk. There are also various natural remedies you can try, like baking soda or vinegar for heartburn.
The upshot is that heartburn is caused by certain foods that you eat, so it should be easy to prevent it or at least reduce the severity. But it does take some effort and commitment to find heartburn relief, and without a plan, you might as well keep carrying around your antacids.
